Is a rubber excavator track better than a steel track?

Many operators wonder which excavator track is better: rubber or steel. In fact, both types of caterpillars have their pros and cons. Much depends, among others on the type of work or type of machine.

Steel and rubber tracks – a comparison

It is not hard to see why the tracks are made of steel. It is a very durable material, resistant to decay and withstanding high temperatures and pressure. Its recycling is also easier. The steel excavator track is most suitable for working on rough concrete, asphalt or rocky conditions. Steel tracks are also known to last longer as they do not wear as easily as rubber. On the other hand, such caterpillars damage hard terrain.

There are also many advantages to using rubber tracks. Due to the fact that they move freely on concrete finishes, they are a good solution for pavements.
These tracks are much more economical than steel tracks, even if they are replaced every year. In addition, driving on rubber tracks is much smoother and quieter than on steel tracks. They are better at absorbing noise than steel, so rubber tracks will be a better choice if done in an area where high noise is a problem. Rubber tracks can also reduce vibration, meaning machines can be driven faster than on steel tracks. They are more flexible in the field than steel, which increases the level of operator comfort. Contrary to steel, which causes much more shocks, which may tire the operator unnecessarily.

Summary

excavator trackRubber tracks are more economical and can be used in a variety of conditions. They are perfect for dirty or grassy surfaces, in many situations they should provide a high degree of adhesion to the ground. However, it should not be forgotten that they will wear more and will require more frequent replacement than steel tracks. Steel tracks are perfect for regular work on uneven terrain – their weight improves the traction and stability of the excavator in such conditions.

In many cases, both types of tracks will do the same job with similar efficiency and quality. The choice between the two is a matter of judging which option is better suited to the specific circumstances of the construction work. If you work among fairly sharp rocks or in mud, the advantages of steel tracks are beyond dispute. Steel track machines are generally more expensive, while rubber track machines are widely available and the more common choice.
