Planetary gear – what’s the using and how to avoid damage?

Planetary gear: What is it and what is it for?

Travel final drive planetary gear is a drive wheel that is used in planetary propulsion transmissions. Depending on the construction, there are: one, two or three rows of satellites (driving gears). Each row has 2 to 5 gears. Rows of satellites are counted from the bottom, ie from main bearings. The first-order planetary gears are always the highest, the higher the planetary gears are smaller. The number of gears and their diameter indicates the quality and transmission of the entire planetary drive system.

The planetary propulsion system consists of satellites – gears, intermediate gears that transfer the drive between the individual rows of satellites and the gear or sun shaft. The solar name was created from analogical comparison with the solar system (the sun in the middle, and the planets – satellites revolve around it).

For decades the planetary propulsion system is the best way to transfer drive in tracked machines. The more satelites are in gear, there is more power. The most common powertrain failures are this one which has one row of satellites because the force acting between the drive wheels when moving forward and back is too great, which causes rapid wear of the sprocket or sun shaft.

Haw to avoid failure?

At the moment when you or your operator hear the shooting coming from the drive system (near the track) you sholud immediately stop working because every movement of the damaged drive system causes more damage. First, one of the satellites gets damaged, the pieces of which get into the bearings. Then the bearings rub out and the rollers spill out, which in turn fall between the rest of the drive wheels and everything begins to “grind”.

Imagine that every move in this situation costs about 500 zlotych (120 euro). It’s bacause next element starts to break with every movement. Therefore, it is worth stopping work immediately and diagnosing the damage in the travel gerabox service.

How to choose gears?

Gear wheels for machines over 5 tons can be selected by catalog numbers. When it comes to smaller machines, most manufacturers do not plan to repair the hydromotor but only to replace it with a new one. The original hydromotor on the 3-5 ton machine site costs between 1,500 and 3,500 euro.

The exceptions are such companies like: CAT, VOLVO, HITACHI, KOMATSU. They provide a large part of catalogs for smaller excavators.

W innym przypadku ( DOOSAN, YANMAR, CASE, ZEPPELIN, BOBCAT, JCB, KUBOTA, TEREX) należy wysłać urządzenie do serwisu hydromotorów lub podać sprzedawcy ilości zębów poszczególnych elementów, średnicę wewnętrzną, zewnętrzną oraz wysokość oraz przesłać zdjęcia uszkodzonych elementów. W ten sposób powinno udać się namierzyć uszkodzone elementy 

Uszkodzony wieniec zewnętrzny, obudowa zwolnicy 

Jeżeli uszkodzona została obudowa zewnętrzna zwolnicy (pierścień zębaty) należy skonsultować się z serwisem zwolnic i ustalić czy da się ją zregenerować czy lepiej zakupić nowe urządzenie.

Nie polecamy zakupu zamienników, lepiej jest zregenerować oryginalny hydromotor lub zakupić nowy także oryginalny jednak często może się okazać, że ten oryginalny będzie wart ponad połowę wartości maszyny. Zamienniki zwolnic mają strasznie słabe silniki hydrauliczne. Nie dość, że od momentu zakupu będzie on miał około 30% wolniejszą lub szybszą jazdę niż oryginalny, to przy pierwszym lepszym upale połączonym z większą eksploatacją maszyn i silnik się przegrzeje co spowoduje drastyczny spadek prędkości jazdy danej strony. O problemie z wyjazdem po najazdach nie wspomnę.
